PTA Issues 300 Licences to Expand Internet Access Across Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued district-level class licences to 300 companies as part of efforts to expand internet services and improve broadband connectivity across Pakistan.

The licences will allow the companies to provide internet services in selected districts, with a particular focus on areas where broadband access and digital infrastructure remain limited.

According to PTA officials, a significant portion of the licences issued in recent months covers districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The move is expected to encourage greater participation by internet service providers in underserved markets.

The initiative is also aimed at accelerating the deployment of fibre-optic networks. Expanding fibre infrastructure can help improve the availability and reliability of high-speed internet services for households, businesses and other users.

Remote and less-connected communities are expected to benefit from the expansion as new service providers enter areas that have historically had fewer broadband options.

The PTA’s licensing initiative comes as demand for reliable internet connectivity continues to grow across Pakistan. Broadband services have become increasingly important for education, online businesses, digital payments, remote work and access to government and private-sector services.

By issuing district-level licences, the regulator is creating opportunities for companies to establish or expand networks at the local level rather than limiting service expansion to major urban centres.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected to receive particular attention under the latest licensing activity, with most of the recently issued licences reportedly covering districts across the province.

The expansion of fibre networks could also support improved internet speeds and network capacity in areas where existing infrastructure is insufficient. However, the pace and scale of actual service improvements will depend on how quickly licensed companies develop their networks and begin operations.

The PTA’s latest move reflects the broader need to extend Pakistan’s digital infrastructure beyond major cities. Greater broadband availability can support economic activity and provide more people with access to online opportunities.

For consumers, increased competition among internet service providers could also create more options for broadband services in districts where connectivity choices have previously been limited.

The 300 district-level licences therefore represent another step toward expanding Pakistan’s internet coverage, particularly in underserved and remote areas. The focus on fibre deployment could further strengthen the country’s broadband infrastructure as demand for dependable high-speed connectivity continues to increase.
