OpenAI Removes Five-Hour Usage Limit for ChatGPT Work and Codex Users on Paid Plans

OpenAI has temporarily removed the previous five-hour usage interval limit for ChatGPT Work and Codex users subscribed to paid plans, allowing users to continue longer work sessions without interruption. The change is expected to benefit professionals, developers, and businesses relying on AI tools for extended productivity tasks.

The update was shared by OpenAI executive Thibault Sottiaux in a July 12 post on X, confirming that the company has relaxed the earlier restriction for selected paid subscribers. The adjustment applies to users on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business plans.

Under the previous system, users could face a five-hour interval cap that limited continuous access to certain ChatGPT and Codex features. With the temporary removal of this restriction, subscribers can now work for longer periods without being stopped by the interval-based usage limit.

However, OpenAI clarified that the change does not mean users have unlimited access. Weekly usage limits remain active, meaning users may still experience restrictions depending on their overall consumption and plan allowances.

The company has described the removal of the five-hour limit as a temporary adjustment and has not provided a specific timeline for how long the relaxed policy will remain in effect. OpenAI has also not confirmed when or whether the previous restriction will be restored.

The decision comes as demand for AI-powered productivity tools continues to increase among businesses, software developers, researchers, and content creators. Longer uninterrupted sessions can help users complete complex tasks such as coding projects, document creation, research analysis, and workflow automation more efficiently.

Codex users, in particular, may benefit from the change as software development often requires extended periods of debugging, testing, and code improvement. Removing shorter session barriers can make AI-assisted programming workflows smoother for developers working on larger projects.

ChatGPT paid plans have continued to evolve as OpenAI adjusts usage policies, introduces new features, and manages demand across its growing user base. Usage limits are typically designed to balance user access with system capacity and performance.

The temporary policy change reflects OpenAI’s efforts to improve the experience for professional users who depend on AI tools for daily tasks. While the relaxed limit provides more flexibility, users should continue monitoring their plan details for any future updates regarding usage restrictions.

As AI adoption expands globally, companies like OpenAI are increasingly focused on finding the right balance between accessibility, performance, and responsible resource management. The latest adjustment gives paid subscribers more freedom while maintaining existing weekly limits.
