Meta is facing renewed criticism after an investigation revealed that dozens of paid advertisements containing AI-generated child sexual abuse material were approved and displayed across its major platforms. The investigation by Wired and the Tech Transparency Project found that the advertisements appeared on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads before being removed by the company.
Researchers identified more than 50 image and video advertisements through Meta’s public advertising library. According to the investigation, the ads reached thousands of users before Meta took action to remove them.
The discovery has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of Meta’s advertising review systems, particularly as artificial intelligence tools make it easier to create and distribute harmful synthetic content. Experts and digital safety advocates say the incident highlights growing challenges for technology companies attempting to control AI-generated abuse.
The advertisements reportedly appeared between November 2025 and August 2026 and included images of children combined with sexually suggestive language and other inappropriate material. Several ads allegedly promoted AI-powered applications designed to digitally remove clothing from images, commonly referred to as “nudify” or digital undressing tools.
According to the investigation, some advertisers showed little effort to disguise the nature of the content or the services being promoted. The findings have intensified concerns about how such advertisements passed through Meta’s approval process despite violating the company’s policies.
Tech Transparency Project Director Katie Paul criticized the situation, emphasizing that the material was not simply user-generated content posted online. Instead, the content was submitted as paid advertising and reportedly went through Meta’s advertising approval process before appearing on its platforms.
The incident has renewed debate over the responsibility of major technology companies in preventing harmful AI-generated content. While platforms have invested heavily in automated moderation systems and human review teams, critics argue that rapidly evolving artificial intelligence technology requires stronger safeguards.
AI-generated exploitation material has become a growing concern worldwide as generative tools become more accessible. Digital rights organizations warn that criminals can misuse these technologies to create realistic fake images and videos, making detection and prevention increasingly complex.
