X has started rolling out its new “About This Account” feature, but the update has already stirred widespread confusion after users noticed incorrect and inconsistent information being displayed. The feature, launched on Monday, aims to show two key details for each account: the country where the account was created and the country it is currently “based” in.
While the idea was meant to increase transparency, the execution appears to have fallen short. Soon after the rollout, users across political, social and international communities began reporting mismatched country labels. In several cases, accounts belonging to public figures and journalists were incorrectly tagged as originating from different regions, resulting in debates, accusations and misinformation spirals.
The backlash grew quickly, with many users claiming the feature unfairly fuels political suspicion and could potentially mislead audiences about an account’s authenticity. Some even described it as a privacy concern disguised as a transparency tool, arguing that inaccurate geolocation data harms rather than helps public trust.
Head of product Nikita Bier acknowledged the issues shortly after the complaints gained traction. In a brief statement, he admitted that the update had “a few rough edges” and shared that the team was working on quick fixes. Bier assured users that improvements would be deployed by Tuesday to correct the faulty indicators and stabilize the feature across all accounts.
Despite these assurances, concerns continue to circulate on the platform, especially among users who rely on X for political commentary or regional reporting. Many have urged the company to delay the update entirely until the feature can be verified and tested more thoroughly.
The incident has also renewed conversations about X’s product-testing approach under current leadership. Critics argue that rushed feature rollouts have repeatedly caused instability and confusion, while supporters praise the platform’s willingness to experiment publicly.
