Pakistan Sees Significant Rise in Women’s Mobile Internet Usage

Pakistan is witnessing a notable increase in women’s mobile internet usage, signaling progress toward digital inclusion and economic empowerment. The development was highlighted during a high-level meeting led by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication at the UN Women Country Office in Islamabad.

The meeting focused on reviewing advancements under the Digitalisation for Women Economic Empowerment (D4WEE) project. This initiative aims to bridge the gender digital divide by improving women’s access to mobile internet and digital tools across Pakistan.

Officials noted that increased connectivity is enabling women to participate more actively in the digital economy. From online businesses to freelance opportunities, improved internet access is opening new avenues for financial independence and skill development.

Despite this progress, challenges remain. A significant gender gap in digital access still exists, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Limited access to smartphones, affordability issues, and social barriers continue to restrict many women from fully benefiting from digital services.

The D4WEE project addresses these challenges through targeted interventions. These include digital literacy programs, policy support, and partnerships aimed at making mobile internet more accessible and affordable for women. The initiative also emphasizes creating a safe and inclusive digital environment.

Stakeholders at the meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between government bodies, development organizations, and the private sector. Such partnerships are seen as critical to scaling efforts and ensuring long-term impact.

The rise in women’s mobile internet usage reflects a broader shift toward digital inclusion in Pakistan. As more women come online, the potential for economic growth and social development increases, benefiting not only individuals but the country as a whole.

Moving forward, continued investment in infrastructure, education, and policy reforms will be essential to sustain this momentum. Expanding digital access for women remains a key priority in achieving inclusive growth and empowering communities nationwide.
