Pakistan is on the brink of a major digital upgrade as the CME-W6 submarine cable officially lands at Hawks Bay, Karachi. Federal Secretary for Information and Technology Zarar Hasim Khan confirmed on Tuesday that the new system is expected to boost nationwide internet speeds by up to 40 percent, marking one of the most significant improvements in the country’s digital connectivity in recent years.
The CME-W6 cable is part of a massive 21,700-kilometer undersea network, extending from Singapore to France. With Karachi serving as one of its critical landing points, the system will strengthen Pakistan’s communication link with major global hubs across Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
Transworld, the global digital solutions provider responsible for this deployment, emphasized the importance of the project. According to the company’s Chief Technical Officer Amiruddin, the cable enables seamless, low-latency data exchange and is designed to handle the rising demand for high-speed internet across the region.
This development also marks the fifth submarine cable system introduced to Pakistan by Transworld. The company previously brought cable systems to the country in 2005, 2015 and most recently in 2024, playing a central role in expanding Pakistan’s international bandwidth capacity.
A key feature of CME-W6 is its collaborative structure. The system has been developed by a consortium of 16 major international companies, pooling expertise and infrastructure to deliver significantly enhanced broadband performance.
The arrival of this cable aligns closely with the government’s broader push toward digital transformation. Pakistan has been actively working to strengthen its IT infrastructure, promote digital inclusion and position itself more competitively in the global technology ecosystem.
With the activation of CME-W6, users across Pakistan are expected to experience faster speeds, improved reliability and reduced network congestion. The increased capacity is also likely to benefit businesses, cloud services, streaming platforms and tech-driven industries that rely on stable high-bandwidth connectivity.
As Pakistan continues to move toward a more digitally integrated future, the landing of CME-W6 stands out as a milestone that strengthens the foundation of the country’s digital economy.
