The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has advised smartphone, tablet and computer users to activate built-in device location and tracking services to improve the chances of recovering devices that are lost or stolen.
The telecom regulator specifically highlighted services such as Apple’s Find My iPhone and Google’s Find My Device, which allow users to locate compatible devices and take certain security measures remotely.
PTA issued the guidance as part of a broader set of device management recommendations designed to help families protect their digital information and reduce the risk of unauthorized access.
Modern smartphones and other connected devices can contain sensitive personal information, including photographs, contacts, messages, documents, financial details and account credentials. Losing access to such a device can therefore create privacy and security risks in addition to the financial loss of the hardware.
Location tracking features can help users determine the approximate location of a missing device when the relevant service has been enabled and the device meets the required connectivity and account conditions.
Apple users can use Find My to locate compatible iPhones and other Apple devices, while Android users can use Google’s Find Hub, formerly known as Find My Device, for supported devices.
These services can provide more than location information. Depending on the device and operating system, users may be able to make a device play a sound, mark it as lost, lock it or remotely erase data.
Activating such features before a device goes missing is important because users may not be able to configure tracking settings after losing access to their phone or tablet.
PTA’s guidance also focuses on preventing unauthorized access to personal information. Users are encouraged to make use of security features such as screen locks, passwords, PINs and biometric authentication where available.
Strong authentication can provide an additional layer of protection if a phone falls into someone else’s hands. Users should also avoid sharing device passwords or account credentials unnecessarily.
Keeping the operating system and applications updated is another important part of device security. Software updates can include security fixes that address vulnerabilities and help protect personal data.
Families can also review the devices used by children and other household members to ensure that appropriate security and recovery features are activated.
For people who frequently travel or carry their devices outside the home, enabling location and recovery services can be particularly useful. A missing device may be easier to locate if its tracking system was already configured before it was lost.
Users should also ensure that their recovery account information is up to date. This can make it easier to regain access to accounts or manage a lost device remotely.
PTA’s latest advice highlights the growing importance of basic digital security practices as smartphones, tablets and computers become increasingly central to everyday communication, banking, work and personal activities.
Activating a device-tracking service takes only a few steps on most modern devices, but it can provide an important recovery and security option if a device is misplaced or stolen.
