Pakistan’s leading telecom operator, Jazz, has announced the acquisition of 190 MHz of additional spectrum in Pakistan’s latest spectrum auction. The purchase, valued at USD 239.375 million, highlights the company’s long-term commitment to strengthening digital connectivity and supporting the country’s transition toward 5G technology.
With this acquisition, Jazz has expanded its total spectrum holdings from 94.4 MHz to 284.4 MHz. The move is expected to significantly enhance the company’s network capacity, improve service quality, and support the growing demand for mobile data across Pakistan.
As Pakistan prepares for the next stage of digital transformation, Jazz has strengthened its spectrum portfolio across several critical frequency bands. The newly acquired spectrum includes 50 MHz in the 3500 MHz band, 70 MHz in the 2600 MHz band, and 50 MHz in the 2300 MHz band. In addition, the company secured 20 MHz in the highly valuable 700 MHz band, known for its ability to deliver wide-area coverage and stronger signals across long distances.
Industry experts consider the 700 MHz band especially important for expanding high-quality connectivity in rural and underserved regions. This spectrum allows telecom operators to provide more stable network coverage in areas where building extensive infrastructure can be challenging.
The expansion comes at a crucial time for Pakistan’s telecommunications sector. Data usage in the country remains significantly below regional averages. On average, a Pakistani user consumed around 8 GB of mobile data during the last fiscal year, compared with nearly 20 GB in neighboring markets.
Connectivity gaps also remain a challenge. Nearly 40 percent of mobile subscribers in Pakistan still lack access to 4G services, while approximately a quarter of the population does not have access to mobile broadband. These figures underline the need for continued investment in network infrastructure and digital services.
The newly acquired spectrum will allow Jazz to improve network performance while continuing to expand its nationwide 4G coverage. At the same time, it will help lay the foundation for the gradual rollout of 5G services in key urban centers and enterprise sectors once the market is ready.
All future deployments will remain aligned with regulations set by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and the policies outlined by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. This ensures that the rollout process follows official guidelines and meets the country’s digital development goals.
Speaking on the development, CEO Aamir Ibrahim emphasized that the investment reflects the company’s commitment to Pakistan’s digital progress. He acknowledged the efforts of the government and regulators in conducting a successful spectrum auction that supports long-term connectivity growth.
Over the past three decades, Jazz has invested more than USD 11 billion in Pakistan’s telecommunications infrastructure. Today, the company continues to evolve into a broader digital ecosystem known as JazzWorld, serving over 100 million customers with a wide range of connectivity and digital services.
This latest investment signals confidence in Pakistan’s digital future and represents another step toward expanding reliable internet access, improving mobile services, and preparing the country for the next generation of connectivity.
