Uncertainty continues to surround the status of Pakistan’s controversial social media monitoring firewall, as both the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and the Ministry of Interior have remained silent for two consecutive days.
Despite widespread reports suggesting that the system may have been deactivated, no official confirmation or denial has been issued by either ministry. The lack of clarity has fueled speculation across the telecom and IT sectors.
Telecom operators, however, have firmly rejected claims that the firewall has been shut down. According to industry sources, the system remains fully operational, and reports of its removal are being described as inaccurate.
The firewall, originally installed to regulate and monitor online content, has been the subject of intense debate due to concerns over internet slowdowns and its impact on Pakistan’s digital economy. Conflicting narratives from government circles and industry stakeholders have now deepened confusion about the system’s current status.
With Pakistan’s telecom sector preparing for major developments, including future 5G expansion, stakeholders are urging authorities to issue a clear and transparent statement to dispel uncertainty and restore confidence among investors and internet users alike.
