Coursera has announced its acquisition of Udemy in a $2.5 billion deal, with both companies emphasizing artificial intelligence as a key driver for the merger. The combined entity aims to enhance the global workforce’s AI skills and accelerate innovation in online learning platforms.
In a joint statement, Coursera and Udemy highlighted that the merger would “expand capacity for sustained investment in AI-driven platform innovation, rapid product development, and durable growth initiatives.” The deal underscores both companies’ commitment to integrating AI across their educational offerings.
During Coursera’s November outlook and strategy call, CEO Greg Hart mentioned AI over 50 times, stressing the role of their AI-enabled platform, which includes tools such as Coursera Coach, designed to provide personalized learning support to students.
The merger positions the new company to lead in AI-powered education, offering learners and professionals enhanced digital learning experiences, skill development, and career advancement opportunities worldwide.
