Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has publicly thanked former US President Donald Trump for playing a pivotal role in finalizing what he described as a “historic” trade agreement between Pakistan and the United States. The landmark deal was officially concluded in Washington on Wednesday night and is expected to usher in a new era of bilateral economic cooperation.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged Trump’s personal involvement and described the agreement as a major achievement for both nations. He wrote, “This landmark deal will enhance our growing cooperation so as to expand the frontiers of our enduring partnership in days to come.”
Trump announced the agreement on his platform, Truth Social, highlighting its strategic value. “We’ve finalized a big trade deal with Pakistan. We will explore oil reserves together. So much oil will be extracted that we may even be able to sell it to India,” Trump stated.
The trade pact includes a series of impactful components: tariff reductions, increased market access for Pakistani goods, and most notably, a framework for joint exploration of Pakistan’s untapped oil reserves.
The deal follows a high-level meeting in Washington, which included Pakistan’s Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Officials from both countries described the negotiations as focused and future-oriented.
Beyond energy cooperation, the agreement outlines strategic collaboration across emerging sectors such as cryptocurrency, minerals, and IT infrastructure. Pakistan’s Ministry of Finance hailed the accord as a catalyst for sustainable economic development and long-term foreign investment.
The agreement also comes against the backdrop of Trump’s newly announced 25% tariff on Indian imports, effective August 1, and a separate trade timeline involving China. The evolving landscape signals shifting trade alliances that may benefit Pakistan in the months to come.
