In response to heightened security requirements surrounding the sacred days of Muharram, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administration has declared a citywide suspension of mobile phone services in Peshawar.
The service blackout will begin shortly after Jumma prayers on the 8th of Muharram and continue uninterrupted until 10 PM on the 10th of Muharram, which marks Ashura. The move is aimed at safeguarding religious processions and preventing any disturbances during this solemn period.
Officials from the police department stated that the mobile network suspension is a preventive security measure, commonly implemented during major religious events to disrupt any potential attempts at sabotage or violence through coordinated communication.
Peshawar’s law enforcement agencies are on high alert, with a multi-layered security operation underway. This includes the deployment of drone surveillance, real-time CCTV feeds, sniper watch points, and mobile command units. Procession routes have been cleared and sealed with enhanced patrolling to minimize risk in known high-alert areas.
Citizens are encouraged to remain calm and avoid unnecessary travel through procession-heavy zones. Entry points into central areas will be screened with metal detectors and search checkpoints. In addition, intelligence units are actively monitoring for any threats across both online and offline platforms.
The provincial government reiterated that these temporary restrictions are critical to maintaining sectarian harmony and avoiding any untoward incidents. Meanwhile, alternative communication methods, including landlines and emergency helplines, will remain functional for urgent needs.
Community leaders have voiced their support for the initiative, noting that collective discipline and precaution will help preserve the sanctity and safety of Muharram rituals across the province.
