Starting June 1, 2025, WhatsApp will stop functioning on several older iPhone models as part of its ongoing efforts to modernize security and improve performance for users.
The company announced that devices running iOS versions below 15.1 will no longer be compatible with WhatsApp. This includes the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus — models that Apple has already classified as obsolete and no longer eligible for updates or repairs.
In an update to its FAQ, WhatsApp explained, “We continuously review which operating systems we support and adjust compatibility to ensure users benefit from the latest security and technical standards. Devices lacking these capabilities are more exposed to cybersecurity threats.”
WhatsApp Business Also Faces Changes
The update affects not just regular users, but also those using the WhatsApp Business app for small and medium-sized enterprises. Business owners relying on older hardware will need to consider upgrading their devices to maintain seamless communication with their customers.
At present, the oldest iPhones that will continue to support WhatsApp are the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. However, since these models stopped receiving major updates with the release of iOS 16, their support may also be reconsidered in future evaluations.
Focus on User Privacy and Security
WhatsApp has recently introduced a range of security enhancements, including advanced chat privacy controls, disappearing messages, and chat lock features. These tools rely on the capabilities of newer operating systems, reinforcing the platform’s decision to phase out older models.
Industry observers see this update as part of a broader strategy within the tech sector to move away from legacy device support in favor of new features and stronger security standards. Users are encouraged to upgrade to newer iPhone models to maintain uninterrupted access to their messages and media.
Not updating may result in a complete loss of communication access within the app, which could significantly impact both personal interactions and business operations.
