Social Media Scams on the Rise
While scrolling Instagram reels, it’s common to encounter ads offering seemingly effortless ways to earn money online. Unfortunately, such promises often hide traps, as one woman from Gorai, Mumbai, recently discovered. Her pursuit of quick earnings turned into a financial nightmare, costing her Rs 6.37 lacs.
The Alluring Trap
On November 30, the woman stumbled upon an ad claiming that she could earn money by simply liking videos online. Intrigued, she clicked on the link, which redirected her to a Telegram group. In the group, scammers presented a detailed plan that appeared legitimate.
Initial Trust Gained
To build credibility, the fraudsters initially transferred small amounts of money to her account in exchange for liking videos. Convinced by these transactions, the woman felt secure enough to proceed. She was then coaxed into making larger investments with promises of greater returns.
The Devastating Loss
Over three transactions, the victim transferred Rs 6.37 lacs. When no profits were returned, she contacted the scammers, only to be asked for additional funds under the guise of a “tax” needed to release her earnings. Realizing she had been duped, the woman filed a complaint with the Borivali Police.
